Henry Duckworth started out studying English as well as Math and got a teaching certificate. He became interested in physics by teaching it in a high school and went back to university to study physics in depth. He was able to determine precise atomic mass by using mass spectrometers with greatly improved resolution, providing evidence for sudden changes in nuclear stability that correspond to the completion of nuclear shells or nuclear distortion. He received the Tory Medal from the Royal Society of Canada.
